USA Comparisons to Nazi Germany
I shared this as a comment on one of my Academy classmate’s Facebook pages, who is arguing that anyone who compares the United States today to Nazi Germany is an idiot:
I agree the United States in 2026 is not in exactly the same situation as Nazi Germany in 1944. But the playbook of fascism is well established and documented. Compare us now to Germany in the early to mid-1930s. If you’re not concerned about the detention centers being operated and purchased around the USA right now by ICE / CBP, I suggest you think more deeply about what is happening and the historical record in Germany. We need to maintain our Constitutional Republic with checks and balances and political compromise. The role of Congress in debating and passing laws is essential. Laws should not be exclusively shaped by executive orders. Public policy should not be defined by demonizing and “othering” immigrants and people of color. We should not attempt to impose a Christian theocracy in the United States. We need to continue to maintain a strong separation of church and state.
Please watch “God and Country,” a 2024 documentary which highlights the pivotal role of evangelical Christians in supporting MAGA and the January 6th insurrection. We need deep, cultural change / healing in our country, and that will not be brought about by just the next election, unfortunately. But we all need to do what we can.

People comparing the US today to Nazi Germany aren't idiots, but they are missing the far more apt comparison, which is comparing the US of today to the US of the past. I wrote a whole book on that, outlining how US history has led to Trump and Project 2025. https://dgilesauthor.com/why-trump/
