Interrogate War Propaganda
In notable news today, the United States has launched an another illegal war, this time against the nation of Iran. As is the case with all issues of foreign policy, there’s a complex set of factors at play here.
But one of the most important is that there is no legitimate, demonstrated rationale for this war, and there’s lots of propaganda continuing to flow from the US administration.
We must continue to not only ask questions and interrogate propaganda, but also advocate for the important values of our nation, our political culture and our Constitution: Representative democracy, the rule of law, checks and balances, and human rights. These are the basics, and they are being absolutely flaunted today by our administration.
Timothy Snyder‘s latest Substack post about this is insightful and worth your consideration.
Gulf Arab states who oppose Iranian power have generated extremely generous packages of compensation for companies associated with Trump personally and with members of his family. The United Arab Emirates invested in a family firm. The Saudis have provided numerous de facto gifts. And sometimes the gifts have been simply gifts. The Qataris gave Trump a jet. The list is very long.
And now — we are using military force to take the side of precisely the countries who have enriched Trump and his family. This backdrop must at the very least be stated in the reporting of the war. Along with the subversion of democracy, personal corruption provides a second interpretive framework.
